When Sage purchased Act! back in 2005, one of their first objectives was to upgrade the database format from DBF to SQL. The initial iterations were built on SQL 2000, and then by 2007 they upgraded to SQL 2005. There have been two significant SQL upgrades since that time, and Act! has benefited from improved speed and performance. 
The version comparision chart provided below is a breakdown of how the product has evolved since the migration to SQL format, with each version ushering in new features, fixes, and compatibility updates.
